We all know that Valentine’s day is a celebration of love and is synonymous with romance. We even have a blog post (written by Melissa, our Founder and CEO) for the guys on how to be romantic! We also love involving the kids for Valentine’s Day. It's nice when kids see their dad get their mom flowers or write a sweet card - it’s a good model for them as they grow into adults and have significant others of their own. But this is a good time to let our kids know how special they are and how much we love them too! Here are some fun ways to involve your kids in Valentine’s Day - whatever age they are.
1. Make a special Valentine’s Day meal together
This can be a fun breakfast (pink pancakes!), or a “fancy” dinner. It’s easy to create a festive table with little goodies from Target and the dollar store. Get the kids involved in cooking, and light some candles. Other meal ideas: homemade pizza, fondue (cheese or chocolate!), and of course - heart shaped cookies or cake! We have some meal and baking ideas here.
2. Have them write cards to friends or family
No matter if you go all out for Valentine's Day or think it’s silly, the idea of letting people know how loved they are is always a good thing. If they’re old enough, kids can write cards to a few friends or even siblings. If they're not old enough, simple drawings and pictures always work well. This is a great one for grandparents!
3. Arts and crafts
Not all kids like to do art projects, but if yours do this is such a perfect way to involve them in Valentine’s Day. It can be simple things like making cards, or gifts for friends and family. Another great idea is to do jewelry projects with them to match your Tiny Tags! Something like a simple beaded necklace or bracelet is easy to do and they will love having something to match mom.
4. Have a “date” with your child
What kid doesn’t love one on one time with mom or dad? If you don’t want to do it on Valentine’s Day, you could give them a ‘voucher’ for another date, or a ticket to a show/movie/event they would love.
5. Do random acts of kindness together
Valentine’s Day is a great day to spread love to everyone - even (or especially) those we don’t know. Visit a nursing home, bake cookies for teachers or health care workers, or give flowers to strangers. These small acts of kindness always make us feel so good, and it’s a great lesson to teach our kids. The past 3 years, Tiny Tags has sponsored “Love Ambassadors” around the country. We send flowers to our ambassadors, who then hand them out at their local senior center with their kiddos. We love the message this gives our children - that they are the gift.
How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Do you involve the kids? There are so many ways to spread love! We have a whole “Valentine’s Day” board on Pinterest - everything from crafts to decorations to meal ideas. And PS - Tiny Tags has lots of great gifts - whether you’re looking for a personalized option or something with a heart - we’ve got you covered!
